In a significant boost to its international reputation, the Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca has been ranked among the top 10 European cities for quality of life, according to a recent report by the European Commission. This recognition places Cluj-Napoca alongside esteemed cities such as Rostock, Braga, and Copenhagen, highlighting its rapid development and growing appeal.

The comprehensive report, part of a regular survey on the quality of life in European cities, provides insights into various facets of urban living across the continent. Conducted in 83 cities across the European Union (EU), European Free Trade Association (EFTA), the UK, the Western Balkans, and Turkey, the survey involved more than 71,000 interviews, underscoring its extensive scope and reliability.

Key findings of the 2023 report include:

• High Satisfaction Rates: The survey revealed that about 9 out of 10 people in Europe are satisfied with living in their city, indicating a widespread contentment with urban life across the continent.
• Eastern European Cities on the Rise: There have been notable improvements in the perceived quality of life in Eastern European cities, with Cluj-Napoca, Białystok, and Gdańsk leading the way. This trend underscores a shift in the region’s urban development and livability.
• Smaller Cities, Bigger Appeal: The report also highlights a growing preference for smaller cities, which are perceived as safer, cleaner, and more conducive to family life, especially for older people and families with young children.
• Non-Capital Cities Gaining Favour: Non-capital cities like Cluj-Napoca are increasingly seen as better places to live, with higher satisfaction rates regarding public spaces, healthcare, housing, and local public administration.

Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, commented on the findings, stating, “Quality of life depends on where we live and what opportunities it can offer us. It is encouraging to know that quality of life in European cities remains high, particularly in small and medium-sized cities.”
