Update 14.02.2023, 15:16:53 (Romanian time): a significant earthquake with a magnitude of ML 5.7, occurred in OLTENIA, GORJ, at a depth of 40 km.

The earthquake occurred 102km NV of Craiova, 120km SV of Sibiu, 146km V of Pitesti, 161km SE of Timisoara, 183km SE of Arad, 195km S of Cluj-Napoca, 204km E of Belgrade, 208km E of Zemun, 212km NE of Nis, 212km V of Brasov.

People around Cluj reported items in their homes shaking and the sense of “diziness” as an earthquake of 5.2 magnitude occurred in Oltenia, Gorj.

The earthquake had a magnitude of ML 5.2, at a depth of 15 km. The earthquake occurred 102km SW of Sibiu, 107km NW of Craiova, 137km W of Pitesti, 166km E of Timisoara, 179km S of Cluj-Napoca, 183km SE of Arad, 196km W of Brasov, 218km E of Belgrade, 222km E of Zemun , 224km W of Ploiesti”, reports the National Research-Development Institute for Earth Physics (Institutul Naţional de Cercetare-Dezvoltare pentru Fizica Pământului).

There were further reports of smaller, magnitude 3.0 aftershock occurring 20 minutes later. The institute reported:

“On 13.02.2023, 17:21:14 (Romania time), a weak earthquake with magnitude ML 3.0 occurred in OLTENIA, GORJ, at a depth of 15 km. The earthquake occurred 109km SW of Sibiu, 111km NW of Craiova, 146km W of Pitesti, 157km SE of Timisoara, 176km SE of Arad, 181km S of Cluj-Napoca, 206km W of Brasov, 208km E of Belgrade, 213km E of Zemun , 225km NE of Nis”.

Earthquakes do happen in Romania, probably more than people might realise, but this one measured higher than those experienced recently. Also people are likely to be more alarmed by the earthquakes following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake which hit Turkey and Syria on February 6th, 2023.
