The National Bank of Romania (BNR) today, has officially presented the new 20 lei banknote. The banknote is the first banknote featuring a female personality.

Ecaterina Teodoroiu was a Romanian woman who fought and died during World War I and is regarded as a heroine of Romania.

The new banknote was presented by BNR governor, Mugur Isărescu after widespread public interest and support at the society level for supporting gender equality and the major role of female personalities throughout Romanian history and society.

The addition of a 20 lei banknote will certainly be a welcome addition to people's wallets, and will now fill the gap between the 10 lei and 50 lei banknotes.

In order to protect against counterfeiting, the banknote, like existing notes, includes a number of security features – some intended for the public, others detectable with special equipment, intended for workers in the banking system.

The circulation of the new banknote will be made through the regional BNR branches of Bucharest, Cluj, Constanța, Dolj, Iași and Timiș from December 1st, 2021.
