Immerse yourself in English language and culture at the local British Council library. You will find hundreds of titles on topics such as management, IT or art. There is an impressive collection of books on British history, aside from the literary works of major writers. You can browse through magazines on film and interior design. Language learning courses useful for exam preparation feature along studies in linguistics.

MEMBERSHIP

There are several options to choose from if you want to enjoy the facilities of the library. A standard membership allows you to borrow 10 different items, from which 5 books, 2 exam materials (that you may hold for 3 weeks), 1 magazine, 2 CD/DVDs (which you must return after one week) .

The fee is 100 lei if you decide to opt for the 1 year plan, or 60 lei for 6 months. It is useful to know that the resources available are photocopiable.

Not interested in a long-term commitment? The ‘Swift’ membership may be suitable for you. It grants you one-day access to the collection for 10 lei. There are also special discounts for pupils, students and teachers of English.

CONVERSATION CLASSES

The BriTeen Club welcomes children and teenagers aged 4-18 years old. School grade and knowledge of English determine the structure of these workshops, that is why an interview is required to assess the pupil’s language level. For preschoolers, the cost of eight 1-hour sessions is 200 lei, while a twelfth-grader will pay 280 lei for eight sessions of 2 hours each.

Adults can join a conversation class as well to improve their speaking skills while discussing topics relevant to them, guided by an English teacher. The course takes place on Monday evenings and participants benefit from a 50% discount off the library subscriptions.

EXAMS

Taking an exam with the British Council, in the presence of highly-trained examiners, gives you the chance to obtain an internationally recognised English language certificate. Cambridge English exams – FCE, CAE, CPE, BEC – or the IELTS are often demanded for admission into university and can enhance your job prospects.
