On March 23rd, 2022, the Romanian Government approved an emergency ordinance which would allow the provision of financial assistance to Romanians hosting Ukrainian refugees.
According to government spokesman, Dan Carbunaru, individuals will be eligible to receive 20 lei per person, per day for food expenses and 50 lei per day for accommodation. The reimbursements come from budgets of the County Inspectorates for Emergency Situations and will also be provided to those who had hosted refugees from the beginning of the crisis.
Dan Carbunaru said, that the money will be given to individuals, volunteers and Romanians who opened their doors to Ukrainian refugees, even those who took in refugees before there was any decisions from the government with regards to support for Romanians hosting Ukrainians fleeing the conflict.
“They opened their doors, received their Ukrainian neighbours and friends in their homes, and here, by this Ordinance, the Government allows Romanians who have made this gesture to be able to continue or at least to diminish their efforts. they have done so far, both in terms of food supply and accommodation “, said Dan Cărbunaru.
The decision also includes hotels and similar accommodation venues, with the government allocating 100 lei per day for each refugee staying in a hotel and 50 lei per day for each person who is being hosted at a location being provided by the Romanian state.
The mechanism will be created by the government and the document will also outline more detailed information regarding the criteria and period of time that the support will be offered.
